Ah, animation. you can be awesome at times. there are just some things you can do animated that you cannot do in live action. for starters, that pesky realism. blag. Secondly, you can create something unique. differing animation styles and all that. they can make creative worlds with it's own laws of physics and throw realism out the fricken window.
*Kicks Realism Out*
but to the topic of this little list i'm making. there are so many animated shows i like, yet only 17 are among the best, in my eyes. what shows? well, you are about to find out.

This is my top 17 animated shows of all time.

17. One Piece

Roger, the Pirate King, proclaims that it's up for grabs and stats that anyone who claims it shall become the King of the Pirates just before his execution. Monkey D. Luffy, son of the Revolution Leader Dragon D. Luffy, seeks to become the King of the Pirates. On the way, Luffy gains a motley crew of colorful characters all with dreams of their own and battle foes who seek either the One Piece or wish to conquer or destroy the world, such as the fishman Arlong, the vengeful Shiki, the tyrant Doflamingo, and the fearsome Blackbeard, to name a few.

16. Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated

the darkest and more mature incarnation of Scooby-Doo to date, even more so then the live-action movies, Mystery Incorporated follows the gang as they once again solve mysteries, but... strange things are afoot in their home of Crystal Cove. They uncover secrets that reveal major revelations about themselves and the town, all leading towards a battle with a evil spirit from the planet Nibiru that exists in a alternate dimension who seeks to consume the world. No, i did not make that last part up.

15. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

The second anime series based on the popular manga, and is actually based on the manga instead of following it's own original story, Fullmetal Alchemist follows brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric as they quest for the Philosophers Stone, a magic gem that will allow Ed to regain his arm and leg and Al his original body. Along the way, they gain new allies and battle deadly enemies: the Hormonculi and their creator, Father, all in a mad dash to prevent the worlds ultimate destruction.

14. Generator Rex

Five years prior to the series, a massive explosion released high concentrations of nanites into the atmosphere, infecting almost every living thing on Earth. These nanites may randomly activate inside their hosts, mutating the subject into a monster known as an E.V.O. (short for "Exponentially Variegated Organism"). Though some E.V.O.s retain human-level sanity, intelligence, and memory and are in full control of their special E.V.O. abilities, most go violently berserk and cause widespread chaos and destruction. An international organization known as Providence exists to combat the E.V.O. threat.
Rex Salazar, our hero, is a fifteen-year-old (sixteen, later on in the series) amnesiac teenager who is an E.V.O. Unlike most E.V.O.s, he lacks any physical deformation but forgets about his past. He is also able to control his active nanites, allowing him to manifest a wide variety of various bio-mechanical abilities and powers. However, Rex is truly unique because he has the ability to deactivate nanites inside other E.V.O.s, effectively curing them of their monstrous mutations. Working for Providence under Agent Six, Rex uses his unique abilities to stop and cure rampant E.V.O.s. His archenemy is Van Kleiss, an E.V.O. scientist who hates and despises Providence. He believes nanite mutations are a gift and should be utilized accordingly. Van Kleiss is connected not only to the original Event which released the nanites upon the Earth, but to Rex himself.

13. Transformers: Aligned Continuity (Prime and Robots in Disguise 2015)

kinda cheating with this one, but they exist in the same timeline. Taking place years after the video games War for Cybertron, Rise of the Dark Spark, and Fall of Cybertron and the novels Exodus, Exiles, and Retribution, Transformers: Prime follows the Autobot and Decepticon war on the planet Earth, where they have lived in hiding for some time. Megatron, using the Blood of Unicron, Dark Energon, is close to victory, but the Autobots and their human allies are fighting back with every fiber of their chaises to prevent galactic destruction.
Robots in Disguise takes place.... well, they don't state how long, so let's say 20 years. RiD takes place 20 years after the events of Prime and follows Bumblebee and a ragtag group of Autobots and reformed Decepticons as they hunt escaped prisoners on Earth. One of hte prisoners, Steeljaw, has plans for the planet and they involve his master, Megatronus the Fallen.

12. Wakfu

in a fantasy world comprised of 12 sentient species, all named after the gods they worship, Wakfu follows a boy named Yugo, who discovers that he is in fact the last Eliatrope, a magical race that disappeared ages ago. Joined by his friends Az, a tiny little bird called a Tofu, Ruel, a bounty hunter who's as greedy as the day is bright, Amalia, light-hearted princess of the Sadida Kingdom, Sir Percidel of Saldygrove, a bumbling and idiotic but well-meaning Knight with a demon trapped in a weapon known as a Shushu named Rubilax, Evangelyne, a master archer and guardian to Amalia, and Adamai, Yugo's dragon brother, they seek to uncover the secrets of the Eliatrope race and deal with nasty villains, such as the Time-Manipulating Nox, the liar and traitor Qilby, the entire Shushu race, and the demi-god ogre Ogrest

11. DragonBall Saga

Dragon Ball follows Son Goku, a young Saiyan who lost memories of his alien heritage when he was a baby. Raised to be a kind lad by his grandpa Gohan, Goku seeks to become the greatest Martial Artist in the world. Traveling with Bulma, Yamcha, and Oolong, they seek the Dragon Balls to fulfill their greatest wishes, all while dealing with Pilaf, who wants the Dragon Balls to rule the world, and Piccolo, a alien split into good and evil beings.
Z ditches the comedy and slow pace of the original and follows a more Adult Goku and his son, who he names after his grandpa Gohan, as he fights to save not only the world, but the entire universe from threats such as Freeza, Cell, and Majin Boo.
Super imminently follows the events of Z and once again follows Goku as he fights to save the universe from more deadly threats, even those from outside the universe. by the way, the first two Arcs of Super are adaptions of the movies Battle of Gods and Resurrection: F. I recommend watching the movies then jumping into Super at episode 28. trust me, you'll save a lot of time that way and you won't be missing much anyway. so, 27 episodes at a half hour each, or 2 movies combined at 3 and a half hours. your call.
Q: What about GT?
A: No.

10. Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Taking place between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, The Clone Wars follows the Jedi as they fight against the Separatists for the fate of the galaxy, with all sides unaware of their ultimate fates. All the while, Bounty Hunters will rise and the secrets of the Force shall be revealed.

9. Nanatsu no Taizai

The Seven Deadly Sins, as they are nicknamed, were once an active group of knights in the region of Britannia, who disbanded after they supposedly plotted to overthrow the Liones Kingdom. Their supposed defeat came at the hands of the Holy Knights, but rumors continued to persist that they were still alive. Ten years later, the Holy Knights staged a coup d'état and captured the king, becoming the new, tyrannical rulers of the kingdom. The third princess, Elizabeth, then starts out on a journey to find the Seven Deadly Sins and enlist their help in taking back the kingdom. And when the truth of what happened 10 years ago are revealed, a war for the ultimate fate of the kingdom, and the world, begins.

8. Vandread

Set in a universe where humans have colonized the galaxy, and in one star system, men and women are completely segregated (on completely different planets: Mejere by the women, Taraak by the men) causing the gender war to be more than just a metaphor.

Male protagonist Hibiki Tokai, a third-class laborer, takes up a bet to steal a high-tech humanoid robot, known as a Vanguard, from a male attack force battleship about to fight the "evil females." Still on board when the battleship takes off, Hibiki is caught in a battle with female pirates that causes all of the ship's crew to evacuate, except for Hibiki, Duelo McFile, and Bart Garsus. Stuck on board and held as prisoners by female pirates, things seem to have hit an all-time low for Hibiki until the retreating males retaliate by firing torpedoes at the ship to prevent it from falling into women's hands. The Paksis Pragma, the mysterious, living core of the battleship, eradicates the missile, forming a wormhole that sends the pirates and warship to a distant part of the galaxy, fusing the battleship with the female pirates' vessel. The fusion results in a quirky ship with very smooth lines, a host of technical problems, and various hidden capabilities that become apparent later on. The Vanguard Hibiki attempted to steal has also been altered along with three of the women's fighters, known as Dreads, allowing the separate ships to combine. The fusion of Hibiki's mecha with one of the fighters is called a Vandread, the eponymous mecha.

In this alternate, futuristic universe, men and women (at least on Taraak and Mejere) consider each other to be completely separate species (Hibiki gains the nickname "Mr. Alien" from Dita Liebely, the female protagonist), and the three men put up with much abuse at the hands of their female captors, but gradually make their presence accepted: Hibiki as a mecha fighter and technician, Duelo as a skilled doctor and engineer, and Bart as the ship's helmsman and navigator.

7. Steven Universe

The series is set in the fictional Beach City, which is in the state of Delmarva[3] on the American East Coast. In Beach City, the Crystal Gems live in an ancient beachside temple, protecting the world from evil. Ageless alien warriors, they project female humanoid forms from magical gemstones that are the core of their being. The four Crystal Gems are Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl and Steven, a young half-human, half-Gem boy who inherited his gemstone from his mother, the Crystal Gems' former leader Rose Quartz. As Steven tries to figure out his powers, he spends his days with his human father Greg, his friend Connie, other people in Beach City, or the other Gems, whether to help them save the world or just to hang out. It began with that question. Nobody knows the bigger picture, and when they do learn it, their entire world is turned upside down. now, instead of fighting each other, they fight against foes that could kill them in their sleep: Project Freelancer, The Meta, and a planet in the midst of a Civil War started by Charon Industries. they may be bumbling idiots without a lick of common sense between them, but they're the best chance at taking out these villainous... well, villains.

2. One Punch Man

The story takes place in the fictional Japanese metropolis of City Z. The world is full of strange monsters that mysteriously appear and cause disasters. Saitama, the protagonist, is an incredibly powerful hero who can easily defeat the monsters or other villains with a single punch. However, due to his overwhelming strength, Saitama has become bored with his powers and is constantly trying to find stronger opponents who can present a challenge to him.

On his adventures, he meets new friends, enemies, and his own disciple, the cyborg Genos, and joins the Heros Association in order to gain official recognition as a hero. Despite defeating many strong monsters that even the Heroes Association’s top members are unable to defeat, Saitama struggles to gain respect. Most people look down on him due to his plain physical appearance, and some accuse him of being a counterfeit hero. Only a small number of individuals recognize his incredible talent and humility towards others.

1. Gurren Lagann

Gurren Lagann takes place in a future where Earth is ruled by the Spiral King, Lordgenome, who forces mankind to live in isolated subterranean villages. These villages have no contact with the surface world or other villages and are under constant threat of earthquakes. Selected villagers called diggers are conscripted to expand their homes deeper underground. Simon, a meek young digger ostracized by his peers, finds solace in his best friend and older brother figure, an eccentric delinquent named Kamina. Kamina encourages Simon to join his gang, Team Gurren, to help him achieve his dream of visiting the surface world. One day, Simon unearths a drill-shaped key called a Core Drill, followed by a small mecha resembling a face called a Gunmen. Shortly thereafter, a huge Gunmen crashes through the ceiling and begins attacking the village, followed by a girl named Yoko, who attempts to repel the Gunmen. Simon uses his Core Drill to activate the smaller Gunmen (which Kamina names Lagann), and it is used to destroy the larger Gunmen and break through to the surface world.

Simon and Kamina learn from Yoko that humans on the surface are attacked each day by Gunmen piloted by beastmen, humanoid creatures who serve as Lordgenome's army. Kamina hijacks a Gunmen and names him Gurren, combining him with Lagann to form the mecha Gurren Lagann. Their actions inspire other humans to steal their own Gunmen and join Team Gurren, which makes Kamina rename it Team Dai-Gurren. Their battle shall shake the world to it's core and ignite a war against a inter-universal race, culminating in a battle with mechs as big as galaxies.
